These are the terms for using Vietling, a Vietnamese vocabulary app. They are short and in plain English, because a document nobody can read is not an agreement.

Who this is between

“Vietling”, “we” and “us” mean the person who makes and runs this app. “You” means whoever is using it. Using the app means these terms apply; if you do not agree with them, the remedy is not to use it.

The app is free, and comes as it is

Vietling costs nothing and carries no advertising. In exchange, it is provided as it is, with no promise that it will keep working, keep its features, or be available at any particular moment. We may change it, take parts of it away, or stop running it altogether.

The teaching material is for practising with

Vietling teaches around 1,200 Vietnamese words with an example sentence each. It was drafted with the help of software and checked by the person who makes the app. Treat it as practice material rather than as a reference: a word that is right in one situation can be wrong in another, and no vocabulary app can tell you which one you are in. Do not use it where an error would matter — a medical, legal, immigration or safety situation is not what this app is for.

Your account

• An account is optional. Without one the app works fully and stores everything on your device.
• You are responsible for your password and for what happens under your account.
• One person, one account. Do not create accounts in bulk or automatically.
• You can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app, at any time, without asking us. See the Privacy Policy.
• We may suspend or remove an account that is being used to attack the service or to harass somebody. We would rather explain than act silently, but we may have to act first.

What not to do with it

• Do not try to break into other people's accounts, or into the service.
• Do not scrape or bulk-download the app's content, or automate requests against it.
• Do not choose a display name or a pet name that harasses somebody, impersonates them, or that you would not say out loud to a stranger. Names are visible to friends you add and on the leaderboard.
• Do not use the app to distribute anything unlawful.

Who owns what

The app itself — its code, its design, its artwork and the way the material is arranged — belongs to us. Some of the content it ships does not, and is used under its own licence:

• Photographs are used under the licences their creators chose. The app lists every creator and licence under Settings → Credits.
• The two typefaces, Baloo 2 and Be Vietnam Pro, are used under the SIL Open Font License.

What you write into the app — your name, your pet's name, your notes — remains yours. We store it to run the service and for nothing else.

Leaderboards

The names you compete against in the league are generated on your own device and are not other people. The app says so on the league screen. Your own XP, tier and promotions are real and come from your own reviews.

Liability

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from using the app — including lost study progress, whether or not you had an account. Keep in mind that the app is free, that we are a very small operation, and that no backup is guaranteed. Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited, and if you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and the app will link to the new version. Continuing to use Vietling after that means the new terms apply.
